Whilst many athletes from Asia are already confirmed to represent their nation on the Olympic startling line, for some in the Laser Standard, Laser Radial, RS:X Men and Women, 49er and 49erFX, it is still all about securing that critical qualification for the final guarantee of a spot in Rio, and their performance at the ASAF Asian Championship would make all the difference. Twenty-three nations are so far represented in the provisional entry lists, with plenty of big players in both the Men and Women fleets, including reigning National Champions and Asian Champions. As for the battle to Rio in the RS X Men and Women fleets, each of the aspirants will face stiff competition amongst them with no clear favourites who have emerged thus far.
This series will also provide opportunities and a platform for new technical officials to be trained and qualified in Asia in the coming years. This funding, along with others that ASAF will be seeking in its continuous efforts to raise more sponsorships, will allow ASAF to grow sailing in Asia, and run the organisation more efficiently. ASAF has been making remarkable progress in the past year towards growing the sport of sailing and we are hopeful that the new administration of ASAF will be able to use this funding to grow the sport even further.
The Asian Sailing Championships from 18 until 25 June this year brings a new perspective to sailing in Asia. Built in a record time of six months, the new centre offers state of the art facilities for sailors, officials, spectators and those keen to join the sport.
