As I wrote here at NRO more than five years ago, we are closer than one might think to a constitutional right to incest, at least if the law has any logic to it. A sample of my new essay:. The story of David Epstein, the Columbia University political scientist and Huffington Post blogger now facing criminal charges of incest, has launched a very interesting discussion.
Incest can occur between people in a consanguineous relationship or between people who are related by affinity. Consanguineous relatives are people who are related by blood. People related by affinity are step-relatives, those related through adoptive measures or marital status, members of the same household, or in other cultures, members of the same clans and lineages.

Corbis When the Supreme Court struck down Texas's law against sodomy in the summer ofin the landmark gay rights case of Lawrence v. Texas, critics warned that its sweeping support of a powerful doctrine of privacy could lead to challenges of state laws that forbade such things as gay marriage and bigamy. The incest taboo is one of the most widespread of all cultural taboosboth in present and in past societies. In most cases, the parents did not have the option to marry to remove that status, as incestuous marriages were, and are, normally also prohibited. A common justification for prohibiting incest is avoiding inbreeding : a collection of genetic disorders suffered by the children of parents with a close genetic relationship.
Emotional incestalso known as covert incest, is a dynamic that occurs in parenting where the parent seeks emotional support through their child that should be sought through an adult relationship. Many times when I am working with people in therapy who are developmentally stuck, they end up sharing that, as children, they were the person their parent turned to as a confidant or for emotional support. Clearly, it is desirable for parents and their children to be close.
People are rightly horrified by abuse scandals at Penn State and in the Catholic church. But what about children who are molested by their own family members? Last year offered plenty of moments to have a sustained national conversation about child sexual abuse: the Jerry Sandusky verdict, the BBC's Jimmy Savile, Horace Mann's faculty members, and a slew of slightly less publicized incidents.
THERE are few taboos left in the world, but committing incest is one of them. Having a sexual relationship with a close member of the family is against the law, but some people find themselves falling into them anyway. The pair were 17 when it began and he can't think of any reason why they have been drawn to each other. Although he doesn't feel any shame about what happened, he knows it's impacted his life enormously.
By Ave Mince-Didier. The crime of incest is committed when people who are related to one another engage in sexual activity, get married, or live together as man and wife. While the precise behavior that is considered incest varies across different states and cultures, almost all societies consider some forms of incest taboo, and laws reflect those beliefs.
